METROPOLİS

Located on İzmir - Ephesus highway, Metropolis means “The City of Mother Goddess”. It was built around 3rd century BC, at the times of the Seleukos Kingdom, with the participation of the neighbouring nomads and Macedonian warriors.

It has lived its golden ages during the Hellenistic Era. During the reign of Rome, many altars were built to the honor of Emperor Augustus, and during the Byzantine days it was assigned as the Episcopal center.

The excavations starting in 1992 has provided important findings concerning the early history of the city.

The city walls at Metropolis are still standing. There is the Ares Temple at Acropolis, and some monumental public structures such asthe theater at the hills. The excavations have revealed the stage building of the theater, the platform of the orchestra, some parts of the sitting benches, the seats for the noblesse, and some altars.

The city walls at Acropolis surround an area of approximately 16,000 square meters, and are accepted as the most successful sample of Hellenistic architecture.

The neighbourhood of Metropolis contains many antic buildings belonging to Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine eras. Among the most important are Araplıtepe, Tepeköy, Sinektepe and Aslanlar Barrows. In the currently ongoing excavations many ceramic pieces, earrings, coins, bronze artifacts, glassware, earthenware and ceramic ware are found in the barrows. The research over the cult cavern belonging to the Mother Goddess, and the excavations at Metropolis are under way.
